From Academia to the Industry at the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Graphenea’s Alba Centeno participated in the Day of Women and Girls in Science at CIC biomaGUNE on February 8th and 9th 2018. CIC biomaGUNE is one of four centers in Donostia that commemorated this day with a series of events that aimed to make visible the activity of women in science, encouraging the choice of scientific careers among girls and adolescents.
Activities during these days included highlighting the historical role of women in science and various scientific demonstrations, including hands-on activities for students. Active female researchers from the four centers gave outreach talks about their ongoing scientific topics and had the opportunity to talk to attendees in an informal atmosphere. Alba gave a seminar on her view of switching from academia to industry, including prospects and outcomes. She talked about her PhD in carbon-based materials and the evolution of her work in Graphenea since November 2010, when Alba was among the first to join us.

This event offered a good opportunity for girls and adolescents to get a feeling for the work being done by women at CIC biomaGUNE, Centro de Física de Materiales (CFM, CSIC-UPV/EHU), CIC nanoGUNE, and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). The event was part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science that was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2016.
