The amine groups of our aminated graphene oxide improves its dispersability in different polymer matrices (epoxy resins, polyester resins, poliols among others). The key to improving the mechanical properties is the obtention of an homogeneous dispersion of the filler in the matrix and it has been proven in the literature that the amine functionalization is an succesful approach to achieve it.

A: During the functionalization process, some of the oxygen moities are reduced, and at the same time alkyl chains are added to the structure. Due to this changes in the composition the dispersability in water decreases and the dispersions are not stable. In order to dispersed it in water surfactants have to be added. Also rGO can be dispersed in low concentrations in NMP, DMF or MeOH.

A: When the alkyl amine is added the interlayer distance of the material is increased what is clearly observed in the XRD spectra, where the (002) peak shifts from 9-11º to around 5-6º. On the other hand, the % of N in the elemental analysis (2-4%) inducates the presence of the amine groups.
